The original NEET UG 2026 examination was held on May 3, 2026, across 552 cities in India and 14 cities abroad, in pen-and-paper mode from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Over 20 lakh candidates appeared for the exam.
However, on May 12, 2026, the NTA officially cancelled the exam following serious allegations that included:
• Paper leak before the examination
• Circulation of guess papers and answer keys
• Suspected malpractice at multiple exam centres
• Irregularities in the examination process
The matter was referred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a thorough inquiry. Several arrests were made in connection with the alleged paper leak case. In the interest of maintaining fairness and credibility of the national examination process, NTA took the tough but necessary decision to conduct a fresh re-examination for all registered candidates.
On May 15, 2026, NTA officially announced the re-examination date through a press conference. Here are the confirmed details:
Re-Exam Date: Sunday, June 21, 2026
Exam Mode: Offline (Pen and Paper Based Test / PBT)
Revised Timing: 2:00 PM to 5:15 PM
Duration: 3 hours 15 minutes (including 15 minutes for OMR filling and security check)
Number of Languages: 13 languages
Exam Centres: Across India and selected international cities
The original NEET exam was held from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM (3 hours). For the re-examination, NTA has revised the timing to 2:00 PM to 5:15 PM. An additional 15 minutes has been provided to candidates for carefully filling in the OMR sheet and for security verification at the exam centre. This change is aimed at ensuring a more streamlined and secure examination process.
One of the most immediate actions candidates need to take is related to the City Choice Window. Here is everything you need to know:
Following the announcement of the re-examination, NTA activated a City Selection Window on its official website neet.nta.nic.in. This is a one-time facility that allows candidates to either confirm their previously allotted exam city or select a new preferred exam city for the re-exam.
• Window Open Date: May 15, 2026
• Window Close Date: May 21, 2026 (up to 11:50 PM)
• Candidates can update their address and select up to two preferred exam cities
• Students who do not wish to change their city can retain their previously allotted exam city
• Previously allotted exam centres will remain valid for those who make no changes
• This is a one-time facility — once submitted, no further changes will be allowed
• Step 1: Visit the official website neet.nta.nic.in
• Step 2: Click on the 'City Selection / Exam Centre Preference' link
• Step 3: Log in using your Application Number and Password
• Step 4: Select your preferred exam city (up to 2 cities)
• Step 5: Update your address if required
• Step 6: Submit the form before May 21, 2026 at 11:50 PM
After the City Choice Window closes on May 21, 2026, NTA will process the applications and release the NEET UG 2026 City Intimation Slip for the re-examination.
The NEET UG 2026 Re-Exam City Intimation Slip is expected to be released in the first week of June 2026. NTA will take the newly submitted city preferences into account while preparing the city intimation slip.
The City Intimation Slip (also called the Exam City Allotment Slip) is an official document released by NTA before the admit card. Its main purpose is to inform candidates about the city in which their exam centre will be located, so they can make travel and accommodation arrangements well in advance.
Since the NEET admit card is typically released only 3–4 days before the exam, the City Intimation Slip gives candidates early notice about the exam location, reducing last-minute stress and confusion.
• Candidate's Name
• Application Number
• Allotted Exam City
• Category and Sub-category
Important: The City Intimation Slip does NOT mention the exact exam centre address. That information will be available only on the official Admit Card.
• Step 1: Go to the official website: neet.nta.nic.in
• Step 2: Click on the 'City Intimation Slip' link on the homepage
• Step 3: Enter your Application Number and Date of Birth / Password
• Step 4: Click Submit to view the slip
• Step 5: Download and save the PDF
• Step 6: Take a printout for reference
The NEET UG 2026 Admit Card (Hall Ticket) is the most critical document for all candidates. Without it, you will not be allowed entry into the examination hall under any circumstances.

The NEET UG 2026 controversy has accelerated discussions on major reforms in the examination system. Here is what candidates and parents should know:
NTA has indicated during recent press releases that NEET UG examinations are expected to shift completely to an online Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode from 2027 onwards. This is a significant change aimed at reducing the risk of paper leaks and improving examination integrity. Candidates preparing for NEET 2027 onwards should note this shift.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation into the NEET UG 2026 paper leak case. Multiple arrests have been made, and an investigation is ongoing. NTA has cooperated fully with the investigative agencies.
Going forward, NTA is expected to implement stricter examination norms including enhanced biometric verification, tighter centre surveillance, revised paper distribution protocols, and more robust OMR handling procedures to ensure examination integrity.
