JEE Main Counselling 2026: JoSAA Process, Dates, Choice Filling, and College List

Scoring well in JEE Main 2026 is a major achievement but crossing the finish line in the exam is only the beginning. Once your result is declared, the real journey begins: the JoSAA Counselling Process. Thousands of students who qualify JEE Main 2026 dream of securing a seat in NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, IIIT Hyderabad, or any of the country's top government-funded engineering colleges. JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) is the centralised body that makes this dream a reality but only for those who understand the process, meet the deadlines, and make smart choices.

What Is JoSAA?

JoSAA stands for Joint Seat Allocation Authority. It is a central government body set up jointly by the Ministry of Education and the National Testing Agency (NTA) to manage the unified seat allocation process for India's top engineering colleges.

Before JoSAA was established in 2015, students had to separately participate in counselling processes for IITs (through CSAB IIT), NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs a process that was confusing, repetitive, and inefficient. JoSAA replaced all of this with a single, transparent, online counselling platform.

What Does JoSAA Do?

JoSAA conducts a centralised seat allocation process for admission to:

•       23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)

•       31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs)

•       26 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs)

•       IIEST Shibpur

•       57 Other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs)

In total, 138 institutes participate in the JoSAA 2026 counselling process. Together, these institutions offer tens of thousands of B.Tech, B.Arch, and B.Plan seats every year.

Who Can Use JoSAA?

JoSAA is used by two categories of students:

•       JEE Advanced 2026 qualifiers: Eligible for IITs (as well as NITs, IIITs, GFTIs)

•       JEE Main 2026 rank holders: Eligible for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs (NOT IITs)

JoSAA 2026 Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply?

Before diving into the counselling process, it is crucial to confirm that you meet the basic eligibility requirements set by JoSAA 2026.

Each Round: What Happens Step by Step

Every JoSAA counselling round follows a four-step sequence:

•       Step 1 – Seat Allotment: JoSAA announces the allotted seat for each candidate based on rank, category, and choices submitted.

•       Step 2 – Seat Confirmation (Online Reporting): The candidate must log in, review their allotted seat, and respond by selecting Freeze, Float, or Slide.

•       Step 3 – Fee Payment: The candidate pays the seat acceptance fee online within the deadline (typically 2-3 days).

•       Step 4 – Document Verification: The candidate uploads required documents on the JoSAA portal for verification by the reporting centre.

JoSAA 2026 Registration Process: Step-by-Step Guide

Registration is the gateway to JoSAA counselling. Here is how to register correctly for JoSAA 2026.

Step 1: Visit the Official JoSAA Website

Go to josaa.nic.in. This is the only official portal. Do not register on any unofficial or third-party website as it can lead to misinformation or data theft.

Step 2: Login Using JEE Credentials

Click on 'Candidate Login / Registration'. Use your JEE Main 2026 Application Number and Password (or JEE Advanced registration number for IIT aspirants). If you are a JEE Advanced qualifier, you may also be prompted to link your JEE Advanced credentials.

Step 3: Fill Personal Details

Enter your personal details accurately including your name (as per Class 10 certificate), date of birth, mobile number, email ID, and address. Any discrepancy between your form details and your documents can raise a query during verification.

Step 4: Select Your Category

Choose your reservation category carefully (General/OBC-NCL/SC/ST/EWS/PwD). Once submitted, category selection cannot be changed, and an incorrect category can result in disqualification.

Step 5: Upload Your Photo and Signature

Upload a recent passport-size photograph and your scanned signature in JPG/JPEG format. The photo must be recent (not more than 6 months old), with a white or light-coloured background.

Step 6: Submit the Registration Form

Review all details carefully before submitting. After submission, save or print your registration confirmation page for future reference.

JoSAA 2026 Choice Filling: The Most Critical Step

Choice filling is arguably the most important step in the entire JoSAA counselling process. It determines which college and branch you will be offered in each round of seat allotment. Making smart choices can be the difference between getting CSE at NIT Trichy or settling for a less preferred branch somewhere else.

What is Choice Filling in JoSAA?

Choice filling is the process where you list your preferred colleges and courses in order of priority. You can add as many choices as you like — from different IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs — and arrange them in the order you prefer.

JoSAA's algorithm then allocates your seat based on:

•       Your rank (JEE Main/JEE Advanced)

•       Your category

•       The preferences you've filled

•       Availability of seats in each institution

How to Fill Choices on JoSAA Portal

•       Log in to josaa.nic.in with your registered credentials.

•       Click on 'Choice Filling' from the dashboard.

•       Browse through available institutes, departments, and programmes.

•       Click 'Add' to add a choice. Arrange them in your preferred order using the drag-and-drop feature.

•       You can modify, reorder, and add/remove choices as many times as you want before the deadline.

•       On or before the last date (June 11, 2026 at 5:00 PM), lock your choices. Once locked, changes cannot be made.

How Many Choices Should You Fill?

JoSAA counselling experts recommend filling 50 to 80 choices. Many students make the mistake of filling only 10-15 choices because they are confident about a particular college. This is risky if your rank doesn't fall within the closing rank of your top choices, you may end up with no seat.

Filling more choices ensures you always have a backup. The algorithm only allots the highest preference that matches your rank.

Understanding Mock Seat Allotment

Before the actual round-wise seat allotment begins, JoSAA conducts two Mock Seat Allotments (June 8 and June 10, 2026). These are simulated allotments based on the choices submitted so far. They help you:

•       Understand where your rank is likely to get you placed.

•       Identify if your choices are too ambitious or too conservative.

•       Revise and reorder your choices before locking.

JoSAA Seat Allotment: Freeze, Float & Slide Explained

After Round 1 seat allotment, every candidate who has been offered a seat must respond within the prescribed window. JoSAA gives you three options to choose from. Understanding these options is critical because they determine your participation in future rounds.

Option 1: Freeze

Meaning: You are happy with the allotted seat and do not want to participate in further rounds. Choosing Freeze means your seat is confirmed and finalized. You will not be considered for any upgrade in subsequent rounds. When to choose: When you are completely satisfied with the college and branch allotted to you.

Option 2: Float

Meaning: You accept the current seat but also want to be considered for better choices (higher-priority options) in subsequent rounds, across any participating institute.

When to choose: When you want to stay in the running for a better college or branch in future rounds but still want to keep your current seat as a backup.

What happens: If a better seat is available in the next round based on your choices, you get it. If not, your current seat remains.

Option 3: Slide

Meaning: You accept your current seat but only want upgradation within the same institute (different branch or programme). Slide is a restricted version of Float the upgradation is limited to the same college.

When to choose: When you are okay with the college but hope for a better branch within that same institution.

CSAB Counselling 2026: What Happens After JoSAA?

After all rounds of JoSAA 2026 are complete, there will be seats left vacant in various institutes. These vacant seats are then allotted through CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) Special Rounds.

Who Can Participate in CSAB 2026?

•       Candidates who did not get any seat in JoSAA rounds.

•       Candidates who got a seat but want a different college or branch during CSAB rounds.

•       Candidates who withdrew from JoSAA but still have a valid JEE Main 2026 rank.

CSAB Special Rounds

CSAB typically conducts 2 Special Rounds after JoSAA ends. These rounds focus specifically on filling vacant seats in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. CSAB also handles admissions for colleges in the North-East states and certain Union Territories of India.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in JoSAA 2026

Thousands of students lose their dream seats every year — not because of low ranks, but because of avoidable mistakes in the counselling process. Here are the most common pitfalls to steer clear of:

1: Missing the Deadline

JoSAA is deadline-driven. Missing fee payment, document upload, or choice-locking deadlines can result in seat cancellation. Always set reminders for every important date.

2: Filling Too Few Choices

Many students fill only 5-10 choices, believing they will definitely get their top choices. If those choices don't work out, you're left with nothing. Always fill 50 to 80 choices spanning multiple colleges and branches.

3: Not Locking Choices

Many first-timers forget to lock their choices before the deadline. While the system auto-locks your last saved choices, it's always safer to lock manually and confirm.

4: Category Certificate Issues

OBC-NCL candidates often face rejections because their category certificate is outdated (not of the current financial year) or doesn't explicitly mention 'Non-Creamy Layer'. Get this verified before the counselling starts.

5: Ignoring the Float/Slide Option

Many students freeze after Round 1, even though they could have gotten a better seat in Round 2 or 3 through Float. Unless you are 100% satisfied with your allotted seat, consider floating.

6: Not Checking Opening/Closing Ranks

Filling choices without checking last year's opening and closing ranks can lead to poor choice ordering. Always cross-reference historical data from the JoSAA official website.

7: Registering on Unofficial Websites

Only use josaa.nic.in. Any other website offering JoSAA registration is unofficial and can lead to fraud or disqualification.

Conclusion

JEE Main 2026 Counselling through JoSAA is a structured, transparent, and fair process but it rewards those who prepare well and act on time. From the moment registration opens on June 2, 2026 to the final round of seat allotment on July 21, 2026, every step requires your full attention and prompt action.
