It is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. It is one of the second generation IITs established by an Act of the Indian Parliament on 6 August, 2008. The campus of IIT Patna, located at Bihta, approximately 35km from Patna, has been fully operational since its inauguration by Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 25 July, 2015.
